0 Calorie Syrups

A sugar-free syrup (sometimes referred to as "zero-calorie") can be a great alternative to adding sugar and calories to many foods. They can be used in beverages, to sweeten foods like yogurt or oatmeal, or to flavor baked goods. The only drawback is that some of these syrups are not calorie free, but rather have very few calories per serving (usually less than 5).

So what's the difference between a sugar-free syrup and a regular syrup?

A simple syrup is made by dissolving sugar with an equal amount of water. A sugar-free syrup contains artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, saccharin or aspartame. Artificial sweeteners are usually much sweeter than sugar, so you don't need as much of them to get the same amount of sweetness. That's why they're often called "zero-calorie" syrups.

Not all brands use artificial sweeteners, so check the label for the ingredients list if you want one without them.

The most popular brand of zero calorie syrups is Da Vinci Gourmet, which has over 100 flavors! Many coffee shops use their products.

Serving Size & Calories

Most sugar-free syrups are packaged in 1-tablespoon servings, and these contain about 6 calories. One tablespoon of regular syrup has 53 calories, so if you're monitoring your calorie intake, you can save a lot of calories by choosing sugar-free syrup. If you typically use 2 tablespoons of syrup on your pancakes or waffles, the savings grows to nearly 100 calories.


If you're watching your fat intake, sugar-free syrup is a low-fat food. Each tablespoon contains only 0.1 grams of fat, meeting the definition of "fat free" for foods that have less than 0.5 grams per serving. Regular syrups contain no fat.

Sugar-free syrups are just like regular syrups but without the added sugar. They are a great alternative for anyone trying to cut back on their sugar intake.

Saturated Fat and Cholesterol

Sugar-free syrups are also cholesterol- and saturated fat-free. Regular syrups do not contain any saturated fat or cholesterol either.


One tablespoon of sugar-free syrup contains 45 milligrams of sodium 3 percent of the 1,500 milligrams recommended as a maximum daily intake by the Institute of Medicine.
